The MAWLE Scholarship was established in 2015 by then MAWLE President June T. Murphy. Lieutenant Murphy joined the Brookline Police Department in 1984, following in the footsteps of her late father Sergeant William R. Murphy. In 2000, Lt. Murphy was appointed as the first female Sergeant in Brookline and in 2003 as the first female Lieutenant. In 2003, Lt. Murphy was a driving force and charter member in creating MAWLE to help other women succeed in law enforcement careers. Her passion for education and desire to help young women start a career in law enforcement/criminal justice motivated her to organize the MAWLE Scholarship for women. In May 2017, Lt. Murphy passed away at the age of 60. To honor her memory and continue her passion of aiding young women in the pursuit of a successful career in law enforcement/criminal justice, the scholarship was renamed the Lieutenant June T. Murphy Scholarship. Since 2018 the scholarship has been awarded annually at the Spirit of MAWLE Awards Ceremony to a candidate who is interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement/criminal justice and who best represents Lt. Murphy’s values and interests, which included hard work, integrity and academic scholarship.
